15 Simple Ways to Adopt an Eco-friendly Lifestyle

15 Simple Ways to Adopt an Eco-friendly Lifestyle

Posted by Snow on

Are you frustrated and overwhelmed by the state of our planet? You want to make a difference but just don't know where to start? No worries, I’ve come up with 15 simple ways to help you adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle. From ditching plastic to embracing sustainable fashion and reducing your energy consumption, these tips are easy to implement and can have a significant impact on the health of our planet. So, let's dive in!

1. Ditch the plastic

Sustainable food storage

Saying single-use plastics are a problem for the environment is a major understatement. It pollutes our oceans and land affecting marine, and wildlife, and humans. Opt for reusable alternatives, such as grocery bags, water bottles, and food containers. These reusables are an easy but very impactful way to start living eco-friendly and make a statement that shows you care about the environment.

2. Reduce, reuse, recycle

The "3 R's" rule brings me back to my school days when I first learned about it. Today, it may be more important than ever and can help make a big impact. We can reduce the amount of waste we create by being mindful of what we consume and making conscious choices to minimize waste; things like bringing your own reusable bags to the grocery store, and choosing products with minimal packaging. Find ways to reuse items before throwing them away,  like turning glass jars into storage containers or using old t-shirts as cleaning rags. When we can no longer reuse an item, we should look for ways to recycle it properly. Check your local recycling guidelines to ensure you're recycling correctly. Remember, reducing and reusing should always be prioritized over recycling.

3. Waste not, want not

This is a big one too! Food waste is one of the major sources of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Making your meals go further helps reduce the emissions of these gasses. Reducing food waste is not only good for the planet but also saves you money. Use up leftovers and get creative with your food scraps. Composting is also a great way to reduce waste and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden.

4. Meatless Mondays (and Tuesdays, Wednesdays...)

You can go further in reducing greenhouse gasses and your carbon footprint by cutting back on meat consumption. You don't have to go full vegan, start small by committing to a few meatless meals a week. There are so many amazing plant-based options available out there that you can enjoy and do good both for you and the planet. Pick Up Limes and Jessica in the Kitchen are one of my favorites where I go when I don't feel creative enough for making lunch.

5. Water-wise ways

Conserving water is essential. Take shorter showers, turn taps off so they don’t drip, and turn the water off when brushing your teeth. These are just a few simple ways you can easily conserve water. You can also reuse your greywater to water your plants or garden.

6. Fashion with a conscience

Sustainable clothing is an excellent way to make a statement with your wardrobe. Choose clothes made from sustainable materials, and support brands that prioritize ethical fashion. Here you can find one of the best slow fashion brands on the market. This will help reduce waste in the fashion industry, which is a significant contributor to environmental pollution.

7. Clean and green

Harsh chemicals in cleaning products can harm both your health and the environment. They are usually packaged in plastics and are full of toxic chemicals. Switch to natural, eco-friendly cleaning products that are gentler on the planet and your health.

8. Secondhand steals

Shopping secondhand is a great way to reduce waste and find unique items. It's also a chic way to stay on-trend and save money. There are some amazing online thrift stores you can shop at, like Thredup and Poshmark.

9. Embrace eco-friendly personal care

Just like with cleaning products, conventional personal care products are full of toxins and packaged in plastic. Switching to eco-friendly personal care is a great way to upgrade your sustainable living. There are so many amazing eco-friendly brands out there, you'll have no trouble finding products that fit your needs.

10. Power down

Unplugging electronics when not in use and upgrading to energy-efficient light bulbs are two effective ways to reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills.

11. Local love

I love this one. Supporting small, local businesses is one of my favorite things to do. It’s a great way to boost your community and it makes a better choice for the environment. Buying local means less transportation and less carbon emission, and it helps the local economy.

12. Green thumbs unite

Growing your own garden

Growing your own food is a sustainable way to have control over your food supply. Not everyone has the conditions to grow their own food, but if you have, you are the lucky one, and should definitely do it!

13. Pedal power

Car emissions are a huge source of pollution. Now, I know it’s easier said than done and might not be an optimal solution for everyone, but ditching your car can be a major boost in reducing your carbon footprint. Take a walk, bike, use public transportation, or even carpool.

14. Paper-free, please

Reducing your paper consumption can have a positive impact on the environment by reducing waste and saving trees. Keep important documents in a storage service, use apps for taking notes, sign up for digital statements, etc.

15. Lead by example

Sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for living a more eco-friendly lifestyle can inspire others to do the same. Get them involved. Small changes can make a big difference in reducing our impact on the planet.

Adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle doesn't have to be complicated and overwhelming. By making small, conscious changes in our daily lives, we can make big improvements and help our planet heal.

So let's commit to ditching single-use plastics, reducing our energy consumption, supporting local businesses, and embracing sustainable practices. Together, we can create a better future!
